Adding Projects Manually in the Portfolio Designer
In this article you will find all details on adding projects manually in the Portfolio Designer. It is also possible to add project in the following views:
In the Portfolio Designer, a new project will be ranked directly below the last selected project.
Therefore, first select the project under which the new project should be inserted by clicking the associated row header.
To add a project to a program, select the desired program first. The project will be inserted into the program at the last position.
When no project or program is selected, new projects will be inserted directly above the Cut-Off line.
Click Add in the toolbar and select the project type to create your new project at the selected list position or directly above the Cut-Off line.
Next, enter a Name, a Start date and a Finish date, and click Add:
You can configure the form for adding projects to contain the required and optional fields that you need. Learn more in the article Configuring an "Add Project" Form.
If you don’t specify a start or end date, the project's length is set automatically according to the selected zoom level in the Portfolio Designer as follows:
Zoom Level |
Standard project length in Meisterplan |
Week | 4 weeks |
Month | 3 month |
Quarter | 2 quarters |
Year | 1 year |
If you already know more details about the project you're adding, like the department or status, you can check the Add more project details box before clicking Add. You can then specify those project details in the next step. See the Project Details (View) article for details.
New projects will be inserted at the left edge of the visible timeline by default. When the left edge of the visible timeline is in the past, the view will automatically scroll to the current day when you add a project, such that the new project will start on the current day (or the next work day on public holidays and weekends).
Adding a Project to a Portfolio with a Project Filter
When adding a project to a portfolio with a project filter, appropriate values will be set for all fields included in that filter to keep the project in the portfolio.
This may include fields that are not currently visible because you have no project field rights for them.
Duplicating a Project
Via the list context menu, you can duplicate a project. This includes allocations, milestones, financials and other data, except milestone dependencies.
When you duplicate a project, the copy will open and you can amend the project's details. See the Project Details (General) article for details.
Assigning Resources, Teams, and Roles
Click the plus icon in the new project's row header to allocate resources, teams, and roles. See the Adding and Editing Allocations article for details.
To learn how to edit allocations of your resources, teams, and roles, read the article Editing Resource, Team, and Role Allocations.
Editing a Project
Portfolio Designer
In the Portfolio Designer, you can edit the start and end dates of a project by holding down the mouse button and dragging the project to the desired start time. For further information see the article Moving Projects or Programs in the Gantt Chart.
You also have the ability to add, edit, and delete milestones, as well as extend or shorten projects at milestones, among other things. Learn all details in the article Milestones, Project Phases and Dependencies.
To edit an existing project, click the pencil icon after that project's name in the Portfolio Designer.
This will open the project details view, where you can edit project fields and view further project details such as Actuals, milestones and priority score details.
See the Project Details (View) section for details.
All entries will be directly applied. When you change the start date of a project, the finish date changes by the same number of days so the project length remains the same. To shorten a project, choose an earlier finish date.
When you are done entering data, click Back on the top right to return to the previous view.
List
In the List, individual project details such as status, goal, project manager, or custom fields can be adjusted directly. You also have the option to edit, comment on, or delete multiple projects at once. Check the boxes next to all the projects you want to adjust, then click Edit in the toolbar:
To select all projects displayed in the list, click the checkbox to the left of the column names.
You can find all details in the article Editing Projects in the List (View).
Board
In the Board view, you can easily move individual projects between columns or swimlanes using drag and drop to update the corresponding project field values, such as Status or Project Phase.
You can also add new projects directly in the Board view. By assigning project fields while creating the project, it will automatically appear in the correct column that is currently displayed in the Board view.
For more information, see the article Board (View).
