Add and configure custom project types based on your organization's needs. This ensures the Project Details and Project Overview display exactly the data that users need per project type.
Required User Rights
- To add, change and delete project types, your user group needs to have the Manage Project Fields, Project Types, Navigation and Advanced right.
- To change a project's type, you need to have the Edit right for the Project Type field under Project Field Rights.
Please note: All users have at least read only rights for the Project Type field. When manually adding a new project, users can select the project type for the new project even if they have read only rights. They will not be able to change the project type later.
Where to Find
Open the left sidebar, click Manage and select Project Types.
The view displays all project types in your system. You can add, delete or configure project types there. With Drag and Drop, you can order the project types in your preferred way. This organization will be displayed for all users when they add new projects and must decide which project type to use.
How to Configure
You can configure up to 100 project types.
To add a new project type, click Add Project Type (Copy Default) in the toolbar. You can configure the project score contribution and a color for the chip that will be displayed at the top of a project.
The new project type will copy the project details and project overview configurations of the default type, making it easier for you to configure the new project type views.
To edit an existing project type, hover over the project type and click the pencil icon that appears in the top right corner of the section. When you click the three dots, you can set the selected project type as default project type or delete it.
Default Project Type
When importing new projects without specifying a project type, for example via Quick Import or REST API, the new projects will automatically be assigned to the default project type.
When you add a new project type, the project details configuration and the project overview configuration will be copied, meaning you do not have to start from scratch when configuring a new project type.
You can set any project type as the default project type by hovering over it and clicking the three dots in the top right of the section, then selecting Set as Default.
How to Use
With Project Types, you can configure the layout of the project details and the project overview for different project types. For example, create project types for different departments or for internal vs. customer projects.
Where Project Types Are Available
In the project details and the project overview, the project type will be displayed at the top of the view.
You can also configure the project type as a field in the Project Details, the Project Overview, the Project List, the Board View and the Roadmap view.
Filters
You can filter for project types using ad-hoc filters and portfolio filters. In integrated reports of the Projects, Allocations and Capacity type, you can select the project type as a grouping or filter field.
Imports
When importing projects using the Quick Import: Projects or the REST API, you can import the project type together with new and existing projects. However, it is not a required field. If you import projects without project type, new projects will be assigned to the default project type, and existing projects will remain unchanged.
When importing projects via the Jira Connector, it is not possible to specify a project type. This means all projects imported via Jira will be assigned the default project type.
Changing a Project's Type
A project's type can be quickly changed by clicking the chip displayed at the top the Project Details, or by editing the field in another view.
When you change the type of a project, the layout for the project details and the project overview will be immediately changed to the new project type. This may cause different data to be displayed, but the data entered for the previous project type is not lost. You can still display it in the Project List, for example, and if you change back to the former project type, the data will be displayed again.
